Moon’s is getting an education on birds. Still green as all get out but he is hunting for the gun and I like the way he runs. This is his first season and I’ve had him in a lot of wild birds and they are taking him to school. Hunting upland birds he is opening up his range when he is not in birds and starting to assimilate some things about handling them. Still making his share of mistakes but not shorting me on effort and I like him. By design I am running him mostly on birds that run and he is figuring out he needs to keep the wind on them when they run out from under his point rather than tracking and busting them. I like a dog that relocates on its own and that is how I go at it. In time he will learn to read the cover he is hunting and the fine line of how much pressure to put on a runner to get it to sit without busting. Right now it is a work in progress. I also use my pointing dogs as dedicated retrievers and included a few pics of some of that.
First dove
First Hun. This was a nice piece of work. Pointed the covey at 50 yards or a little more in low diffuse cover. Head up high in the wind.
First wild rooster. Tracked these birds around 300 yards to the edge of a near vertical drop off before he got them pointed.
A few more coming.
